About the Brand

What does "Mimamsaa" mean and how is it pronounced?

Mimamsaa (pronounced mee-MAAM-saa) comes from the Sanskrit word Mīmāṃsā, meaning inquiry, reflection and the search for deeper meaning. Founder Ankita Singh chose the name to reflect the label's practice of looking beyond the decorative surface of Indian craft to understand its origins, its makers and the new forms it can take in contemporary life.

Who founded Mimamsaa?

Mimamsaa was founded in Lucknow in 2016 by Ankita Singh, a Fashion Design graduate of NIFT, soon after her graduation. Where are Mimamsaa garments made?

Every Mimamsaa garment is designed, sampled, constructed and finished at the brand's studio in Noida, India, with specialised hand embroidery carried out by experienced karigars in Chowk, Lucknow, a historic centre of Indian hand embroidery. A single garment may pass through the hands of 20 to 25 specialists across design, cutting, embroidery, construction and finishing.

What crafts and textiles is Mimamsaa known for?

Mimamsaa is known for handwoven tissue silks, crushed tissue, Banarasi brocades, organza and munga silk, combined with hand embroidery traditions of Lucknow including aari, zardozi, resham threadwork, naqshi, dabka and sadi work.
